Mega Mall Story is one of Kairosoft’s business management sim/building games. You’re placed in charge of building your own mall, selecting and improving stores, hiring and assigning staff, appealing to different customers with different tastes, helping the town around you developed to increase your customer base, and expanding in size to grow from a small collection of shops to a towering shopping center.
It’s very much in the style of other Kairosoft games like Venture Towns, Game Dev Story, or Cafeteria Nipponica sprite-based graphics that would look at home on a 90s console game, cute characters, silly humor, a cheerful, innocent atmosphere and a surprisingly deep and complex game underlying it all. It’s highly satisfying and interesting as a management sim/strategy game, and it just makes me feel good in a way few things do. The cheery atmosphere is infectious, the graphics are charming and colorful, the characters are cute and endearing— it’s a very happy, innocent world, without crossing the line into seeming saccharine or childish.
Mega Mall Story serves as something of a stand-in for Kairosoft as a whole in this list. There are actually several Kairosoft games I’d include on a personal list of my all-time Android favorites, but if I had to narrow it down to just one game— and I do, because if five different entries in this article all included the same second paragraph somebody would notice sooner or later— it would be this one.
