Oh poor Ouya, the poor system just can’t get a break. The 8 million dollar Kickstarter project that launched in 2013 is reportedly calling it quits, and has entered acquisition talks with a number of companies in both China and the US.
We previously reported that the Ouya was attempting to branch out into the Asian market with the help of Chinese smartphone seller Xiaomi, but now Ouya has allegedly come to the conclusion that cashing out is the better option. Ever since its launch in 2013, the Ouya has failed to attract customers.
Talks are still in the early stages, but Ouya is said to be engaging with Chinese firms like Xiaomi and Tencent. In the US as well, Google and Amazon have been talking about a deal with Ouya. A Chinese purchase seems much more likely at this point.
An Android gaming system that doesn’t rely on Google services makes a ton of sense in the Chinese market – the Ouya, however, just wouldn’t add anything substantial to Google’s or Amazon’s gaming efforts.
