A new patent was filed by Nintendo that would allow it to emulate its mobile game consoles, including the Game Boy line of devices specifically, in other settings, including on seat-back displays in airplanes and trains, and on mobile devices including cell phones. This is very interesting, considering Nintendo’s renewed interest in running its back catalogue on different devices.
The patent talks specifically about emulations, allowing Nintendo to use it for its own licensed software, and distribute it legally. Nintendo already emulates their older systems on the Wii, WiiU and 3DS, but this move could bring Nintendo games to Android devices. Recently, Nintendo offered a Pokemon spin off for the iPad and iPhone, but have yet to give full ports, like Square Enix or Sega has.
It’s interesting to see Nintendo looking into this matter, considering they’ve been loosening the grip on some of their franchises (most recently, The Legend of Zelda. The recent spinoff title, Hyrule Warriors, was developed by Tecmo Koei.)
