<< PREV 11. Heroes of Steel RPG Elite NEXT >>
We were thrilled when we found out that indie developers, the Trese Brothers, had cobbled together a Kickstarter Campaign for a traditional RPG because one, the guys know RPGs and two, there isn’t a developer out there that does more for their fans than the Trese brothers. Andrew and Cory Trese, the hearts and minds behind Trese Bros Games, consistently provide updates (often free ones) to all of their games for years after they’re built. The other reason that the Trese Brothers have a loyal following is because they are passionate about games, and doubly so about their own creations, which in turn play like labors of love. Heroes of Steel, released in January of 2014, is such a game. Both a post-apocalyptic and a fantasy role-playing game, Heroes of Steel is a magnificent, storied, turn-based role-playing game. Because the world has been ravaged by apocalypse, the last remnants of humanity have taken refuge in the Underdeep, a vast underground world composed of caverns and tunnels. From there, mankind is attempting to rebuild human civilization. You control a group of four characters, each a relatively unique spin on conventional fantasy characters and each fleshed out with well-realized MOs. Beginning the game as fugitives, the story evolves over Heroes of Steel’s three episodes until your party is eventually contending with a horrible evil that has trailed humanity into its refuge in the Underdeep. Heroes of Steel offers up great turn-based tactical combat, engaging skill and leveling systems as well as bunches of functional loot to play with. Like a few other titles on this list HoS offers IAPs, but like any game we’d ever honor on an HD best of list what few IAPs are present are fair, worthwhile, one-shot affairs. In other words, you buy something once and you keep it forever. This is a Trese Brothers game after all, which is another element that makes Heroes of Steel such a happening title. As if the first three episodes weren’t game enough (whisper: they are), the Trese Brothers, likely the most community-centric developers you will find anywhere, will continue perfecting Heroes of Steel, and continuously release quality content for it at ridiculously low prices for years to come. Again: years to come. Literally.
