When we say mobile gaming offers up innovative RPG experiences, we are talking about game’s like 2014’s DS port of the JRPG, The World Ends with You. Developer Square Enix has to be commended for releasing such a strange and decidedly Japanese RPG in the West as well as for giving the title such high-end localization. What begins as a seemingly typical JRPG story involving a disaffected and edgy teen, evolves into a narrative that is both superbly well-told and compellingly original. What’s more, The World Ends with You’s complex rhythm-based battle system is intense and thoroughly rewarding once you get past its learning curve. Stir into this mix TWEWY’s beautiful nouveau anime art-style and top-notch soundtrack and you have a title that stands as one of the most innovative, fun and engaging RPGs to come along in years, on any system.
