Game journalists and other critics are easily wowed by originality—the end product could be half-assed crapola of the lowest order, but make it original in conception or design and you will earn some points from the most severe critic. And yet there’s a strain of good quality entertainment media entirely void of originality that’s as well-crafted as it is entertaining. Case in point: Kingdom Rush. If there is an original idea in the Kingdom Rush games it escapes me. And yet you’d be hard pressed to find a finer tower defense game on Android or anywhere else for that matter. The genius of the three Kingdom Rush games: Kingdom Rush, Kingdom Rush Frontiers and the recent Kingdom Rush Origins is of the kind found in games like Diablo and Warcraft, and like the Blizzard team of yore, the folks at Ironhide Game Studios are master craftsman. To begin with the art work is exemplary mobile game art. It’s cartoony yet not so much as to detract from its solid badassery. What’s more, or a TD title, players get a wealth of stuff to play around with, hero units that level, spells, a tiny cadre of reserve units and of course towers, each of which has a small upgrade tree by the time you get into the second quarter of any of the three Kingdom Rush games. What’s more, all of the Kingdom Rush games feature a veritable throng of fun, cool-looking enemy units, each of which carry specific attack and defense attributes that dovetail with the various iterations of the players towers and units. The games’ myriad elements, from the difficulty progression of the campaigns to the interplay between tower and enemy attacks and defense types makes for a whole that is nothing if not a well-honed machine. As of the writing of this article, in early 2015, among the top ranked paid games avaialabe on the Play Store is the latest iteration Kingdom Rush iteration: Kingdom Rush Origins, and there it will likely stay as the three Kingdom Rush titles are without a doubt, among the five best tower defense games on mobile. Buy them. Play them. Love them.
