Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a 3D open world RPG for your phone? Kind of like a mobile Skyrim–light. Crescent Moon Games actually has made two for Android. The first one they cobbled together for ‘Droid is Aralon: Sword and Shadow. While it’s a little thin on the ‘role’ aspect of role playing as the game’s narrative blows chunks, the title, in spite of this, is a beautifully rendered 3D ARPG.
Players choose between six classes and three races when creating their avatars, and can eventually choose between eight different types of mounts, including a dragon. Aralon also sports elaborate skill trees for each of its eight classes, many of which translate into spells and fighting skills that show off cool 3D effects and animations when employed in-game. The game world itself features beautifully rendered environments, night and day routines that offer up gleaming sunsets and starry nighttime skies. Questing or just wandering the countryside and battling baddies is invariably immersive and fun as the environs and monsters are cool looking, numerous and varied. What’s more, combat packs both heft and weight.
The game also boasts plenty of loot with which players can customize their avatar’s person as he evolves from leather-clad weakling to plate-clad badass. It’s also worth noting that unlike the vast majority of mobile RPGs of its ilk, Aralon doesn’t attempt to charge for basic game elements (think: skill points and loot) that are earned in RPGs everywhere else in gaming. Players who enjoy open 3D worlds and ARPGs will find a lot of goodness in Aralon: Sword and Shadow, which rightly earned its way onto this list by way of fun factor and good looks alone.
