When I came across Beast Busters featuring KOF, I immediately thought “yes, this will be my new favorite game.” It’s got everything I would want in a game. A ridiculous concept, an anime aesthetic, Japanese voice acting and zombies. This game literally has everything you’d expect from an over-the-top shooter from the east. Unfortunately, it’s weighed down by very western IAPs, and it ruins an otherwise great time.
Beast Busters is a gallery-style shooter for the mobile platforms. Your character stands perfectly still as “Beasts” (zombies) slowly advance. That might be boring on more robust hardware, but on a touchscreen it allows one thumb to control the shooting reticule while the other taps the trigger, reload, and special buttons. It’s like House of the Dead in the palm of your hand!
The King of Fighters are in the subtitle, but they don’t really do much, and show up in the way of special moves and abilities. The game features a two-player mode and tight controls for the type of game is it. Here’s the bad part – it falls into some pretty big IAP traps, mainly the energy-based system (which requires that you wait a certain amount of time to play again, or buy your way back in) and a leveling up system that has grind written all over it. I’d recommend this game in a heartbeat if you could pay a flat fee and play forever, but as of right now, it’s frustrating watching how that potential fall victim to free-to-play vices. You can have a go for yourself if you’d like here.
