Bird is the Word
An odd but entertaining puzzle game from Veraxen, Block Blast is a mixture of Tetris and scene customization. While there’s no dialogue, there is a clear story told through pictures that starts to make sense as you progress. Some colorful bird is traveling somewhere and goes on an adventure after its plane crashes. Though it doesn’t really make sense, players can still enjoy this quirky game, despite a few minor issues.
Stack the Blocks

What’s a little off-putting about Block Blast is that players are given no instructions once the game begins. After pressing start, a grid with three different blocks appears, and that’s it. No text appearing telling them what to do or anything. While a bit inconvenient, gameplay isn’t that hard to pick up. Each level has different requirements to meet, such as collecting a number of yellow and blue blocks, bubbles, gems, etc. There also seems to be unlimited moves, so gameplay can last a while. After completing a level, players are rewarded with coins and diamonds. Diamonds are needed to add color to a scene. With five different color options to choose from, players can customize a scene however they want.
If stuck on a level, this is when players want to use power-ups. There are four in total: a pinwheel, hammer, laser gun and jackhammer. The pinwheel rotates any block 90 degrees while the hammer destroys any one block. As for the laser gun, it destroys all blocks in a row, and the jackhammer takes out a column. Power-ups can be obtained either by spending coins or opening a chest. However, a chest can only be opened after completing 50 levels. There’s also the Daily Quest, which involves putting together a block puzzle on a smaller grid. All block pieces must be used to fill the grid and complete the quest to earn coins and power-ups.

Ad-Mageddon
While Block Blast has its charm, some players might be put off by just how many ads this game has. It seems like every time a level is won or lost, an ad pops up. Most can be exited fairly quickly, but others seem to take forever. An ad can be watched to earn extra coins, though that’s the only useful one. It can get very annoying, very quickly having to deal with ad after ad. Another, less significant issue, is that when players can’t continue a level, the colorful bird pops up with an ugly crying face. Who though that was a good idea? It’s disturbing to look at and completely unnecessary. Just asking if players want to continue would’ve been fine.
Colorful Fun
The story in Block Blast may be off the wall, but the gameplay is both simple and entertaining. A unique blend of the famous stacking game Tetris and scene coloring that can be enjoyed by any kind of player. There are a lot of ads that pop up every so often, which might turn some players away, but the game itself runs smoothly. Definitely a worthy timewaster.
Is It Hardcore?
Kind of...
While a lot of random ads can be annoying, the gameplay is fun, and the levels are just the right amount of challenging to keep players coming back for more.
