Retelling a Classic Story
Dynasty Scrolls, the hit RPG is now available in the Google Play store. Set during China’s Three Kingdoms Period, this epic RPG from developer Youzu weaves historic events with fantasy ideas to create an exciting story. A mysterious hero arises to save the land from evil, but do you have what it takes to save the kingdom?
Dynasty Scrolls is a straightforward turn-based RPG. Its combat system is fairly in-depth but doesn’t reinvent the wheel in any way, outside of its unique combo system. Gamers who are familiar with this style of game have likely played something nearly identical. Characters have a range of attacks that vary in strength and ability, with characters taking turns in battle. Dynasty Scrolls doesn’t try anything new or daring in regards to combat. It does however maintain a tried-and-true system commonly seen in games of this genre. Players also have the ability to play online with friends.
Impressive Art Style
While the gameplay may not be groundbreaking, the visuals, writing, and world-building stand out. Players can unlock new characters to fill out their party and each one is lavishly designed by hundreds of top-class painters. The over-the-top nature of each character’s design plays well with the game’s ancient setting. And all of them come to life through beautiful animation, most notably in the anime-style cutscenes. Characters can also perform combo attacks with other characters in battle which feature some stunning visuals. There are dozens of combo attacks for players to explore and training paths available to make them even more powerful.
Although Dynasty Scrolls’ overall story is cliché, the game’s self-aware and tongue-in-cheek dialogue makes it all feel unique. Characters have a habit of speaking directly to the player and breaking the fourth wall, which can be rather amusing in the heat of battle. However, the writing as a whole is rather clunky mostly due to poor translation. Dialogue isn’t necessary for driving the plot though as the lush landscapes and changing battle settings tell it well entirely on their own.
Dynasty Scrolls is already a major hit, taking only a few days for the game to reach one million users. Youzu is giving away special in-game perks to celebrate the milestone, so anyone curious to check out Dynasty Scrolls should do so before the celebration is over
