Fantastic Pets Review

Come Together

Fantastic Pets is an addicting puzzle and building game created by developer, Cuiling Studio. The main gameplay revolves around a series of levels where the player must combine and merge three of the same item that lie around the area. Gameplay is very repetitive among the levels, yet remains very addictive and entertaining.

The game takes place in Fantasia, a land taken over by demons and monsters who poisoned the land and drove away all the pets. The player must now solve the merging puzzles in each level in order to heal the poisoned land and bring back the pets and magic to Fantasia.

As players combine items, they are able to produce stars that unlock greyed-out areas of the levels. The goal is to use enough stars to expose three statues on the level, and then combine them to win. Some levels reward higher bonuses based on how fast a level can be beaten.

In the Middle of the Street

The other area of Fantastic Pets is the player’s base. This is an area where all the level rewards earned by the player are sent. They can also set up their own area full of pets and plants and decorations that they collect or purchase with coins or gems. The base adds an extra layer to the gameplay that helps add extra worth to the main levels in the game.

The home base level is an excellent addition to the game. This can help Fantastic Pets stand out from the overcrowded group of merging games available on Android. The concept has become very unoriginal. Searching the word “merge” on any app store will show you pages of games with almost identical game mechanics. The home base helps give Fantastic Pets some breathing room among the competition.

When it comes to in-game currency, coins are relatively easy to come by. Players can earn coins by completing objectives, opening chests, or destroying fallen stars in levels. Gems are harder to obtain. Gems can be given through levels and objectives and can also be obtained by destroying large gems that appear in levels.

Cut the Check

The primary way to obtain gems in Fantastic Pets is by using real-world currency to purchase packs of gems. At times this grows increasingly frustrating. Very often, level plays will run out which will require players to either purchase gems or wait hours until they are able to play again.

Fantastic Pets can be very addicting and it’s a great way to kill time. Unfortunately, this appeal is damaged by the popup that appears after every few levels, letting players know that they can either pay a large sum of gems to gain more plays or they must wait hours until the next level is available to them.

Fantastic Pets is loads of fun and is an easy game to get the hang of. Players of all ages will enjoy the puzzling levels and challenging timed levels. However, given the nature of the game, it seems expected that players would play straight through each level. As a result, many players will find themselves running straight into the paywall more often than they’d expect.

Is It Hardcore?
2.5

Eh, maybe.

The levels are challenging and a joy to play through, but with constant paywall popups, and an unoriginal concept, Fantastic Pets runs out of momentum rather quickly.
