Midgard, Mobile
Last month, an exciting surprise followed Sony’s live “State of Play” update-stream. Square Enix fans got a peek into two new Final Fantasy experiences. Mobile fans are being treated to a set of two new titles in the franchise, set to release in the next year and a half. Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis are slated for 2021 and 2021 releases, respectively. Each seeks to bring the characters and locales of one of the series’ most beloved entries to brand new audiences.
The First Soldier breaks ground as an online battle-royale game (a franchise first) set 30 years before the events of FFVII. As the Shinra Corporation seeks to extend its influence, you enlist with the militant SOLDIER unit. As a member of this experimental brigade of augmented fighters, you seek to prove yourself in a dynamic PvP arena. The initial announcement trailer shows off a range of combat styles, with a wide variety of weapons and melee attacks. With solo and party-play options, The First Soldier looks to be a promising update to the genre. Thankfully, Square Enix’s signature flair finds itself all over what we’ve seen so far.
Our second title leaps into the main story of FFVII, including a wider range of content than the original PS1 release. Ever Crisis is a single player JRPG experience that takes cues and elements of the vastly successful Final Fantasy VII: Remake. Updated story elements and stylized graphics cover the complete FVII timeline, including previous, limited release tie-ins. Overall this appears as though it’s going to be a good entry point to the franchise.
More to Come
All things considered, The First Soldier and Ever Crisis don’t have definitive release dates beyond the 2021-2022 window. Hopefully, Square Enix will provide more details over the next several months. Alongside the FFVII: Remake- Intergrade and FFXVI on the horizon for consoles, this is a great time to be a Final Fantasy fan. As always, keep an eye out for Hardcore Droid’s previews and reviews to come!
