Terror from Tokyo!
Kneel before the King of Monsters! Godzilla Battle Line rises from the depths of the ocean to invade the Google Play store, bringing with it one of the most famous characters in the history of cinema. This game comes with a stamp of authenticity; it is brought to us by TOHO Games, an offshoot of Toho Co., Ltd., the Japanese movie studio that first created Godzilla in 1954.
Godzilla Battle Line looks like a straightforward online action game where monsters battle each other to the death. These bouts take place in a top-down view and last for three minutes, or apparently until one of the player’s “lead monsters” is defeated. However, you won’t control your creatures in battle. After you strategically assemble a team of monsters, you then have to plan how they fight, and they move on their own afterwards according to your strategy. This seems accurate. After all, who could ever really hope to control Godzilla? He goes where he pleases.
This game features a number of famous kaiju (giant monsters) besides Godzilla, including Rodan, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Anguirus, and Mechagodzilla. There’s also man-made weapons like tanks and train bombs featured in various Godzilla movies. According to the Google Play page, winning battles unlocks more maps of “Monster Island,” where you can find more beasts. Collecting and unlocking the various kaiju looks to be a major selling point of Godzilla Battle Line.
This game doesn’t seem to bear any relation to the Godzilla vs Kong movie released earlier this year. It might be an attempt to capitalize on the hype that came with it though, albeit a few months later. Surely the good folks at Toho Co., Ltd. would never rush out an inferior quality product using their most recognizable and beloved creation just to make a quick buck? I wouldn’t know. But if you are at all unsure I recommend you just wait for the Hardcore Droid Review to come out for this one.
