Moth Balls and Mayhem
No fresh-baked cookies await on this visit to granny’s house. Granny 3 brings back Swedish creator DVlopers scary characters in a brand-new horror arcade game. Wander around the moat protected home and search for a way out without getting caught. This horror title provides a terrifying key hunt in which you will eventually develop a flawless strategy in your efforts to escape Granny’s house.
In the menu of Granny 3, you have a lot of choices on how you want to play the game. Aside from the difficulty, you can also choose enemies. A drop-down box lets you choose to have both granny and grandpa; or one or the other. Another allows you to turn on Slendrina, who adds another challenge to the title. Granny is the main antagonist, but grandpa isn’t anything to laugh about either. This sequel equips grandpa with a shotgun. Now simply running away becomes even more challenging.
Home, Sweet Home
When you start the game, you are locked in a cell after being shot by grandpa. The drawbridge is drawn, leaving you no way out. Around the map, you’ll discover keys and items needed to escape. As you explore, you’ll encounter granny who can hear you and grandpa who cannot. Dropping items or stepping on creaking floors will alert granny to your location. It thus becomes rather important to not stick around after making a noise.
To make things easier, Granny 3 leaves you with two weapons that can temporarily stop your grandparents. One is a slingshot that you can eventually unlock, and the other is grandpa’s shotgun. Taking advantage of weapons can be the difference between escaping and dying. Getting caught doesn’t always mean game over. You have five days to escape the house and each death loses you one day.
The one downside to Granny 3 is the lack of a save feature. This title has to be completed in one go. Fortunately, it doesn’t take too long to complete. The map seems huge at first, but it’s not hard to explore quickly. This can cause players to relax after a while which creates some fun jump scares. Unlike the other Granny games, Granny 3 only has one escape option right now. DVloper might eventually add new escapes like they did with the previous versions.
Hide and Shriek
The graphics aren’t the best in Granny 3 but are still pretty impressive for a mobile title. This doesn’t stop granny, grandpa or Slendrina from being truly terrifying, however. While most of the map is very basic and lacking in nuance, the characters have enough detail to stand out.
No horror game is complete without chilling sound effects. Granny 3’s sound effects really add to the atmosphere and make up for some of its simplistic designs. Music is quiet to make the creaks from the floorboards seem extremely loud. Being spotted by granny or grandpa sparks a dramatic flair in the music. Sometimes they will even say something that only adds more terror. Hearing a deep voice say “I see you” is enough to make even the bravest gamer’s heart race.
Overall, Granny 3 is a thrilling horror escape game that doesn’t rest until you escape through the front gate. Chilling sounds and horrifying creaks keep the anxiety high enough to make every moment frightening. DVloper manages to add a few new elements to this chilling sequel that creates new challenges. Tedious gameplay due to the back and forth of item fetching, hampers the game’s replay value. Granny 3 remains, however, a great way to kill some time offering up some spooky sound effects, solid escape game design and a pair of chilling characters blocking your way to freedom.
