Kakao Games globally released Guardian Tales last week. Kakao has published a few mobile puzzle games in the past but is now trying its hand at RPGs. Unlike most hero collectors, Guardian Tales features just 50 characters which makes it easier to choose your favorites. Players chose their guardian’s gender and one of three personality traits: daring, quiet or bright. Gamers play as a new recruit who’s eager to defend their home turf of Kanterbury and to explore other worlds and kingdoms.
Even though this a brand new game, it has a nostalgic aesthetic, resembling the vibe of GameBoy Color graphics. The controls are even similar in that touch arrow buttons are on the left, and the attack buttons are on the right. Gamers will play sprite versions of their chosen heroes and must scavenge the map for health, money, and equipment. If you’re looking for a break from your console but need more than tap and swipe gameplay, then this game might do the trick.
With every great hero adventure, there’s always a trusty sidekick and special moves to get you out of sticky situations. Like Kirby Star Allies, you pick up friends along the way and they follow right behind you. You can even join guilds and fight against other players when you get tired of the NCPs.
Guardian Tales had one million pre-registrations right before launch and it currently holds a 4.8 on Google Play. We can’t wait to see what it’s all about. Come back soon for our HD review.
