12/17/13 – Galaxoid Released for ‘Droid/Developer Jacob Davis Joins HD for So You Want To Work in Video Games Part III
Galaxoid developer, Jacob Davis joins the many devs and journalists who’ve shared with our readers some of the means by which they made it as part of our ongoing So You Want to Work in Video Games Series.
We were mucho impressed with Galaxoid, Davis’s first development effort and thus asked him to hop on board Hardcore Droid’s most popular series of articles. As part of the vetting process for te latest iteration of the series, Hardcore Droid’s Dabney Bailey sent over the following assessment:
Galaxoid is a fast paced space shooter that invokes the legacy of arcade classics like Galaga and Space Invaders. The premise is exactly what you’d expect out of a game like this: move along the bottom of the screen and shoot bad guys before they blow up your ship. Luckily, your intergalactic rivals are nice enough to arrange themselves into neat rows for tidy destruction, and they also explode into points and juicy powerups. Thanks, alien scum!
You play through a whopping 50 levels and 5 bosses, ensuring that even the most veteran space pilots will face a true challenge in their quest to defend the galaxy. High scores and achievements give players who’ve beaten the game something to vie for.
The gameplay is addictive, and the fast-paced, no-nonsense levels ensure that this will be a go-to game for Android gamers looking to kill a few minutes (and aliens). The graphics and especially the music are a beautiful throwback to the early days of gaming. Arcade games of yesterdecade offered electronic bleeps and bloops as a crude replacement for music. I’m not precisely sure how they managed to give classic arcade music such a dramatic facelift, but the music is catchy, fun, and nostalgic.
So, is it worth a download? For eight quarters, you can transform your Android device into a modern remake of the classic space shooter genre. Not too shabby! Plus, if you don’t defend the Earth from alien invaders, who will!?
