Respecting Diversity
MARVEL Contest of Champions has added new Black Panther content ahead of Marvel’s new movie, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Premiering on November 11th, the sequel takes place after T’Challa’s death. In addition, his family has to deal with another civilization from under the sea, led by Prince Namor and Attuma. The movie takes their looks and origins in a different direction. They both have darker skin tones, not to mention they’re wearing colorful tribal-looking accessories. Played by Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta and Venezuelan actor Alex Livinalli, Namor and Attuma hail from the underwater kingdom of Talocan, with Mesoamerican roots. An executive at Marvel stated that Namor’s Spanish name, ‘El niño sin amor,’ translates to “the boy without love.” This change was made because ““It’s important for people to see themselves in the movies,”” Huerta stated in an interview.
Continuing The Legacy
MARVEL Contest of Champions has a completely different storyline, of course. Shuri, Princess and head of the Wakandan Design Group, contacted Namor, king of Atlantis, for aid in defending her home from Galactus. Namor in the game looks relatively the same as he has since his comic debut in 1939. Attuma has had many looks since he first appeared in 1964, and his current one is terrifying. Adorned with armor made from various shark bones and teeth, he’s the villain, and willing to resort to any means necessary to defend his people. Shuri is set to arrive on November 10th with Attuma following on December 1st. Their character cards are up on the Contest of Champions website so players can get a feel for their strengths and weaknesses. In the meantime, their new trailer, Sea Of Troubles, can be found on YouTube.
