Virtual Pets from the Past
Niantic’s newest title in development is the AR game Peridot, where players can raise their own pets. One of the leading experts in augmented reality, Niantic has already used AR in Pokémon Go. With Peridot, Niantic promises to expand on its AR capabilities.
Raising pets in video games is nothing new, but it’s an enduring classic. Tamagotchi and Petz were the first of this genre. Niantic has a new spin on raising virtual pets with Peridot. The titular pets (called Dots for short) have been asleep for thousands of years, and it’s up to players to protect them. These one-of-a-kind creatures face a threat that only players can save them from: extinction.
The Dots have woken up to a world they no longer recognize and players need to raise them from birth. Players have the opportunity to nurture Dots and develop deep bonds with them. There’s also the chance to play and work with other players and their Dots to continue diversifying the species. Players can breed different types of Dots, from unicorns to ones resembling dragons. Players can take care of their Dots through walks in their neighborhood. There’s even the chance of discovering helpful items to take care of the Dots. Niantic has hidden unique treasures for players and their Dots to find.
Niantic is preparing Peridot for a soft launch period and players can sign up for their newsletter to stay up to date. Also, keep your eye out for the Hardcore review of Peridot!
