After delays and pushes to the launch date, Rainbow Six Mobile is set to finally launch this year on both Android and iOS. Based on the extremely popular Rainbow Six: Siege rather than any of the more classic Rainbow Six titles, it will be publisher Ubisoft’s latest mobile title and the first in the genre for some time.
When it comes to FPS games, however, adaptions to mobile generally rank hit or miss, with some successes and some that failed to capture the original magic. Given that Rainbow Six: Siege has such a unique structure compared to its rivals, can it really make a seamless transition?
What is Rainbow Six?
Loosely based on the works of writer Tom Clancy, the Rainbow Six series started out in team-based single-player missions involving spec ops or covert ops. Most modern gamers, however, will know it more from the most recent ongoing entry, Rainbow Six: Siege. The game has a ‘breach-and-clear’ format where one team sets up defenses inside of a building and another has to breach in and clear it, with teams alternating as attackers and defenders.
One unique aspect of it is the massive amount of diversity amongst the game’s operators, with members of special forces units from all over the world. Smartphones may have come a long way but between the small space and the array of other options that will need to be on the screen as well, it feels like being extra precise might be too much of a challenge for many players. With that said, PUBG Mobile also requires a lot of precision to play successfully, albeit with a much less crowded screen, so there is hope.
What Are The Early Impressions?
Across reviewers of the game’s beta so far, the overall opinion appears to be that the game is solid but limited. The gunplay has received a lot of praise for how natural it feels so far with the exception of a few expected glitches, although having such a cluttered screen seems to negatively affect the movement controls.
A lack of content present compared to the non-mobile version ranks as the biggest negative so far. The number of maps and modes is severely reduced, although this might be for the beta, and that famous roster of operators has been slashed with the unlocking process also being quite a heavy grind. Given that Ubisoft have often favored the live service approach, we’d expect to see a lot of missing content rolled out over several game seasons.
All-in-all, it seems that those who love Rainbow Six: Siege shouldn’t be too upset with this mobile adaptation, although there’s a good chance their favorite operator might be missing at the start at least. The game is currently going through another beta round with a release now pegged for some time in 2023, so we should have a much better impression of the game within a few months.
