The Choices Are Yours
Imagine it! You’re responsible for developing an advanced “Nanocell Technology”, a tech capable of healing injuries. But when a bio-weapon attack occurs in the city of London, two scientists find themselves in a locked-down laboratory with time— and air— slowly running out. Sounds exciting, right? That is the premise of Wales Interactive’s The Complex, which dropped on Google Play this week.
The Complex is a sci-fi thriller adventure that purportedly plays out more like an interactive movie than it does a video game. You are put into the shoes of scientist Amy Tenant, the woman responsible for developing the Nanocell Technology for the Kensington Corporation. From the start, gamers are presented with choose-your-own-path style gameplay; akin to what one would see in the Telltale games. Your actions and relationships with other characters will lead you to one of eight suspenseful endings. The choices are yours and yours alone.
Now, while these are interesting mechanics for those that enjoy this kind of gameplay, the plot of The Complex feels like it’s been ripped straight out of a high-quality television production or your run-of-the-mill spy flick. An evil corporation, Nanocell Technology that’s responsible for killing people, a bio-weapon attack, said corporation keeping its actions in the dark? Tell me that doesn’t sound like the plot of a Bond film. However, it’s all in the execution, so we’ll hold our breath for now.
It’s been quite a while since we have seen a full-motion video game on Android. And despite our reservations about the games premise, Wales Interactive is promising a deep and compelling interactive movie. The Complex rated M for mature and is available on Google Play, Android, and iPhone for $5.99. Stay tuned for Hardcore Droid review.
