Stemming the Neon Tide
Indie mobile game developer Tomnoki launched Sphere Defense: Tower Defense last month. The tower defense game draws inspiration from the 2008 iOS game geoDefense, which the creator of Sphere Defense was greatly impressed by. This is their first game development project, and it is free-to-play with no in-game purchases, though it does contain ads.
Sphere Defense features retro-inspired neon graphics, resulting in an immediately striking visual aesthetic. Players can freely place seven different types of units as they defend Earth from alien invaders. Once players get a handle on things, they can explore different difficulty levels, chase high scores, and no-damage runs.
“When I played geoDefense,” said Sphere Defense’s developer, “I was deeply impressed by how such a simple game could be so fun and beautiful. Although this is my first attempt at game development, I wanted my initial project to be similar to geoDefense.”
The game is available on iOS and Android, and players can now download it from the App Store and Google Play. It only has about 10 downloads as of this writing, but it looks like it may have real potential. I certainly intend to give it a try, so check back later for our Hardcore Droid review.
