War Troops 1917 Review

Spread the love

Straightforward Strategy? Yes, Please.

If you have been looking for a new strategy game to delve into, then look no further! War Troops 1917, the latest from indie developers Koco Games, offers genuinely addictive gameplay. It’s easy to get sucked into the game trying to figure out which combinations of soldiers and weapons will create the fastest (or perhaps most unique) route to success.

What you see is what you get, which in the world of gaming is a win. The trailer and images available on the Google Play Store are straightforward. I didn’t feel like I downloaded one game and got another; it was exactly what I expected. The playthrough is simple, like with most lineup strategy games. War Troops 1917 takes place, as you might imagine, in Europe during World War I and focuses on trench warfare. Each battle can be different, as you can change your choices for defense and use of the trenches each time. You must also decide which combinations of troops and warfare work best for you.

The Coin System

War Troops is setup via ten landscapes, each with eight levels or battles to complete before moving on. There is a coin system employed to upgrade and prepare for harder levels. You earn many coins with each win, so it does not take too long for you to afford upgrades. This will make your strategizing easier. It is up to you How you spend your coins. You can upgrade your current soldiers and weapons or you may invest in new officers and defense mechanisms. Your choices will affect your gameplay, but it is entirely up to you. There are no wrong answers.

If you tend to be impatient, you can buy as many coins as you would like by way of in-app purchases. The creators also continue to add new maps that you can purchase if you complete the existing missions and want to keep playing. Thankfully, the reality is that you can expect to play through the game without needing to make any purchases at all. War Troops 1917 is free on Google Play and provides ample opportunities to earn plenty of coins in-game. Of course, we would hope and expect this from any game at Hardcore Droid, but it is a delight to find such a generous and well-made free game with no ads or purchases necessary.

Game's main menu

Aesthetics and Playability

War Troops offers a 2D art style reminiscent of games from the 90s. Honestly, the main menu is not all that interesting and might turn a user off before even playing the game. In fact, if amazing graphics are what keep you playing, this game lacks the feeling of immersion found in other games with high-end graphics. However, if you want an interesting strategy game and can look past the 2D art, this game is worth it.

The actual gameplay is incredibly smooth, I had no glitches in any of my playthroughs, and the retro art style did not deter me from enjoying the game. The weapons and troops regenerate in increasing amounts of time depending on your chosen abilities. I have found that this is quite common in most strategy games. Seeing as “strategy” is the main idea of the game, this is not a drawback at all, rather a hurdle that you must include in your battle planning.

Overall, War Troops certainly put all its cards on the table in its trailer and ad copy. It’s fun to play and although the art is rather outdated, the gameplay does not leave the player feeling like anything is missing. It’s easy to earn coins and make advancements as you go, and your upgrade choices directly affect your battle strategies. The game has eighty levels to complete and will certainly keep you entertained for a long time.

A solid strategy game with a retro design and a reliable structure, War Troops 1917 will be a definite treat to anyone who enjoys the genre.
