Modern Day Wing Commander or Space Invaders?
“That man is playing Galaga!” If that line from Tony Stark in Avengers makes you think of games like Wing Commander or Space Invaders, you aren’t alone. That’s what WinWing is; a modern-day version of these two classics. Ivymobile International Enterprise Limited has packed this action, adventure shooter with a ton of different of gameplay for players to enjoy.
WinWing is full of fun, adventure, and plenty of escapism. After all, who hasn’t always dreamed of flying an airplane in some fashion? So, is this game really like a more modern version of Wing Commander and Space Invaders? Yes, it is, but it is so much more and so much better!
Gameplay, Airplanes, Enemies
Imagine you’re a pilot and you’re flying over a field. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? It would be if you didn’t have to worry about dealing with enemies firing projectiles at you left and right. That’s the basis of WinWing’s gameplay. Players get to fly different airplane models and use various weapons to destroy enemy planes. Nothing could be simpler.
There are eight different planes that can be used during the game. Each of these start at level one and max out at level eight. As they upgrade, their HP and attack attributes vastly improve. Upgrades greatly improve your chances of completing a level.
Enemies are a lot of fun. Now, maybe that sounds silly, but it’s true. Battles start off in waves and the number can vary from anywhere between a total of 20 to 50. Players will deal with at least one to three enemy planes at the start, with each wave getting progressively tougher. How do you deal with a barrage of enemies? Thankfully, once you defeat a wave of baddies you collect diamonds that level you up and enable you to use power-ups. Collect diamonds and you can use power-ups like a frozen missile, a missile that freezes enemy planes.
Another example of a power-up is superior firepower, which allows your plane to have a little more bang for its buck. And a reflector shield? You’ve got it! Extremely useful for bouncing enemy projectiles back at them. Let’s say that’s not quite enough and you’d like to create a distraction for your enemies to fire at. What can you do? Select the phantom power-up and you can have a phantom version of your plane fly in battle with you. Holy diversion!
Boss Fights, Collecting Materials, Fusing
Boss fights are an integral part of this shooter experience. After defeating a certain number of enemies, you will engage in a boss fight. Dodging enemy projectiles and missiles is difficult enough, but boss battles up the ante. Unlike regular enemy fights, when dealing with bosses you only have one plane to take out. Be warned! Just because there’s only one plane to deal with doesn’t mean things are any easier. Bosses constantly launch a barrage of bullets, missiles, and projectiles at you. You’re forced to weave in and out to avoid damage while trying to figure out the firing pattern. Figuring out the pattern can be tough because you never know how many bullets you’re dealing with.
What’s an airplane without added improvements? Fortunately, WinWing offers plenty of chances to do just that. After defeating a barrage of opponents or completing a level you will be rewarded with items that will help upgrade your aircraft. Plus, they’ll add extra assistance to you in the next level. For example, you can collect upgrades that will help improve your armor, weapons, and even your wingman assistance. Not bad, really.
The game also gives you an option to fuse materials to make better materials. Now, fusing is simple. Players choose items they want to fuse and if there’s enough of the same type, fuse them together to improve their attributes. Quite handy and helpful when you’re dealing with tougher enemies.
Overall Impressions and Comparisons
All-in-all, WinWing is a total joy to play! The plot isn’t complicated, gameplay is easy, and things get a lot more challenging as you progress. Ivymobile International Enterprises Limited should be enormously proud of themselves. They crafted a shooter that can be mentioned in the same breath as Space Invaders or even Wing Commander. That’s exactly what they’ve done. Except they’ve improved on the best features of those two games and made them better. If you’re looking for a fun shooter experience and are eager to rekindle some nostalgia WinWing is up your alley.
Is It Hardcore?
As hardcore as Tom Cruise flying a fighter jet as Maverick in Top Gun.
Ivymobile International Enterprises Limited has crafted a great third-person shooter. Win Wing is a total joy to play and can be mentioned in the same breath as nostalgic classics like Space Invaders and Wing Commander.
