<< PREV Xcom: Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within INTRO >>
Anyway you look at it Xcom: Enemy Unknown and Xcom: Enemy Within are hands down the finest strategy games to be had on Android, or any other mobile platform for that matter. Graphically, technologically, and most importantly in terms of hands down smart, fun and engaging strategy gameplay nothing comes close. An impressive feat, considering that both titles were major releases from AAA developers that came out only two years ago, and a year and change back respectively. That we are presently at a point where a high-end AAA title can see a likely port within the space of a year is impressive to say the least, and good news for Android gamers to be sure.
As game ports go, they’re both absolutely exemplary. Gameplay-wise, they’re straight ports of the originals, with all the mechanics and complexity intact. For those of you who have yet to take the plunge, the strategic aspects of the game are complex enough to keep any sim fan engaged. You’ll find yourself managing your Xcom organization on several fronts, nurturing humanity’s first line of defense against alien invasion by way of researching new weapons and equipment, and of course by commanding your troops in tense, turn-based firefights with the enemy. The graphics aren’t quite on the same level as the PC and console versions, but are nevertheless superb, and it retains all the original voices as well.
They’re also pricy for mobile titles at $10 a pop, but that’s nothing really when you consider what you get for those ten dollars, and if you want games comparable to what’s available from major publishers on consoles and PCs to be viable on Android you can’t expect to pay Generic Tower Defense #347B prices for everything, especially for a title that provides such a compelling, nuanced and rich experience that we’d cite it as the best Android strategy game ever made.
