Flurry, a mobile analytics company purchased by Yahoo lat year, recently posted an article on mobile and app usage throughout 2014 showing overall growth and detailing which types of apps have seen the largest growth.
Unsurprisingly there was growth across all categories, though at 76% it’s down from last year’s surge of 115%. With an increase of 220% on Android, it was a clear winner overall with 174% across all OSs.
Utilities and shopping came second with a respectable 121%. Even third place, last year’s leader-in-growth, social and messaging, grew 103%, helped by new messaging platforms such as Snapchat or Wechat.
Growth for games had the lowest growth rate at 30%. While this may look rather meager compared to the triple figures of the top tree it makes a lot of sense considering games have long been filling the shelves of the app store, and with a variety of genres to choose from, a throng of hardworking developers, and constant new content, they’ve always been popular. And they likely always will be.
The team at Flurry also spent some time looking into people’s usage of shopping apps, running a study based on when they’re used ,to try understand the growth. If you’re interested in seeing a more thorough breakdown you can find the article here.
