Something New Is Mushrooming!
If you consider yourself a strategy or RPG enthusiast, Legend of Mushroom might just be the game for you. For as cheap as it was, the last thing I expected was for it to leave a good impression on me. While it is far from the most amazing strategy game I have picked up, I can say with confidence it is among the most charming and unique, and here’s why.
A World of Mushrooms and Magic!
As the name implies, Legend of Mushroom takes players on a quest across a magical kingdom inhabited by mushroom people. These adorable little fungi are out on a quest to find a way to turn into humans! From the start, I was drawn in by the adorable art style, which only got more appealing as I played.
Legend of Mushroom simplifies—and honestly, saves—the farming mechanics that often plague many other RPGs. Farming for items or materials, while certainly part of the experience of building up your party and skill over time, can more often than not be a tedious experience that brings me out of the game instead.
Legend of Mushroom is a different story, though. There is a special NPC called the Genie that makes farming far less of a headache. You get access to her early in the game. She is a spirit in a lamp that grants you access to various kinds of equipment, sometimes rare.
The number shown beneath her lamp indicates how many times you can use it to roll for different items. It is kind of like a mini-Gacha. Most of the time, you will obtain items from this roll that are helpful for that point in the game. As you play, however, you can use resources to upgrade the lamp. This in turn improves the grade of items you can pull. The more you improve the Genie, the more advanced the kinds of items you get from her. That’s the kind of quality of life that makes RPGs like this less of a chore to play, which I appreciated.
The wide variety of classes helped with this as well. I was particular to the swordmaster class because I’m a sucker for swords, but the game allows you to easily switch classes and experiment. It was fun to tailor my gaming experience to what I was most comfortable with, especially for an RPG.
Expand Your Garden and Your Squad!
Surprisingly, one of the most enjoyable side activities was defending and growing my garden. I appreciated that the game let me grow my garden at my own pace, and seeing it expand over time was a fulfilling experience. Not to mention the helpful materials it yielded now and then were very helpful.
I also had a blast with the Boss Challenge feature, letting me join an army with other players to take on fearsome and powerful bosses. I felt like I had to carry my team more than once though because of how much I had been playing compared to them, but it was all about having fun in the end.
Final Verdict
Overall, Legend of Mushroom was a breath of fresh air. A charming little game with an adorable cast of characters, plenty of customizability in your avatar and gameplay, and a plethora of side activities to keep you entertained.
While it may be a bit more on the easy side, it makes up for it by being approachable, fun, and engaging in its world, features, and interconnectedness with other players. This is a great choice for both casual and veteran RPG enthusiasts alike.
Legend of Mushroom is available to download now on the App Store, Google Play, and PC.
