This week sees the long awaited release of Hearthstone: Heroes Of Warcraft on Android. For the unaware Hearthstone is a digital trading card game (TCG) set in the fantasy world of Warcraft, drawing it’s characters and equipment from the Humans, High elves, Dryads, Dwarves , Gnomes and other creatures of the Blizzard’s fantasy franchise. Initially released last year on Windows and OS X it was well received with more than 25 million subscribers to date, participating in battles and daily quest to win new cards and earn gold.
Most matches (with the exception of arena) are played with 30 preselected cards in one-vs-one battles, each player taking turns to summon minions, equip power ups and items, and cast spells in an attempt to deplete their opponents life points and win the match. There are six battlefields to play on, taken from the Warcraft universe, including Orgrimmarm, Blackrock Mountain, Naxxramas, and Pandaria. Each stage is unique with its own style and interactive elements, but there is no difference in game play or advantages between them.
Hearthstone has five game modes on offer comprising practice, Play, duelling, Arena and Adventure.Play mode features one on one ranked matches against other players to win gold, and other prizes such as card designs and portraits. Duelling is similar, allowing you to participate for unranked matches against friends but without the rewards. In Arena mode players can use some of their acquired gold to enter in a series of games against of other players, using a deck of 30 randomized cards, until they accrue 12 wins or three losses. Adventure mode is a single player campaign that offers the opportunity to fight against bosses in an attempt to unlock new cards. New stages are released on a weekly basis, and need to be unlocked using either gold accrued in other modes or through IAPs. Practice mode pits players against the computer in one-on-one matches for a chance to practice and improve.
