The Nightmare Cooperative is the latest roguelike to grace the Android, but unlike the countless others making their way through the Play Store, this one offers a bit of a twist on the well-known permadeath mechanic. When you die, you’re dead – forever. You must start from the beginning with a brand new character. It’s almost like hitting the reset button every time you die.
Developer Lucky Frame have been twisting this death mechanic into the wounds of PC and Mac gamers since July, and have now decided to bring their game mobile devices.
You’re given a group of characters to start with, and each has their own special perks. Each will also stay dead when they are eventually overrun and stabbed to death. The Nightmare Cooperative takes permadeath to a new level, and gives the game a unique feel and insane difficulty. It forces players to think every action through, even more so than normal rougelike games.
If you’re a masochist looking for a hardcore fix, this game might be for you. It’s charming retro graphics and difficulty make The Nightmare Cooperative an entertaining title, just make sure you invest in a phone case before smashing your device against the wall in anger. The price of admission is only $3.99.
