Basketball Arena Review

Basketball Arena 00
Spread the love

Space Jam on Steroids

“Let’s play some basketball.” Yes, that’s the iconic line uttered by Michael Jordan in the film Space Jam. Of course, in this case, you aren’t Michael Jordan and you aren’t dealing with the Monstars. However, Basketball Arena, developed by Masomo, is a bit like Space Jam on steroids and invokes nostalgic feelings of games like NBA Jam or even the current 2K series of NBA titles. With plenty of rim rattling action that LeBron James couldn’t hope to duplicate, Basketball Arena has plenty of b-ball madness to offer.

Basketball Arena 01

Gameplay, Rosters and Matches

One of the great things about Basketball Arena is its gameplay. Players can jump right in and play matches against other players in online competition. Once the game begins, the goal is simple: score more points than your opponent. Sounds as simple as a slam dunk, doesn’t it? Well, it is at first, but the more victories you pile up the tougher your opposition will become. This can be a source of frustration later on, particularly if your team isn’t up to snuff.

With a robust roster to choose from, Basketball Arena makes you feel like you’re in the sneakers of a real athlete. Rosters are divided into three tiers: Rookies, Pros and Superstars. Rookies are your standard players, and you’ll start out with Roni and Jack as your two main rookies. As you win matches and build your team, you’ll unlock more rookie cards and add additional players. Pros are a bit of a different story. Pros consist of players such as÷ Mike (a subtle reference to Michael Jordan), The Dagger (Kobe Bryant), Buzzer Beater (Steph Curry), and even The King (LeBron James). Unlock more pro cards to help strengthen your roster. Superstars are the most advanced tier and consist of mascots such as the Wild Tiger, Angry Monkey, Benny the Bull and Black Panther.

Matches are straightforward: they play out like standard basketball games. Score the most points in a certain amount of time and you emerge victorious. You can build up a nice little win streak, however, your opponents will get tougher over time. Also, keep an eye on your players’ energy during matches. Low energy hampers your chances to score baskets so be sure to score points as quickly as possible.

Basketball Arena 02

Leveling Up and Chests

It wouldn’t be a game without being able to level up, would it? Well, Basketball Arena provides players ample opportunity to do just that. Leveling up allows you to improve your players’ attributes like useable energy, backup energy and jumping ability. Level up by winning matches or collecting chests. These will give you upgrades which you can use against your opponents.

Speaking of chests, they are perhaps one of the most unique aspects of this game. There are four different chests: Common chests, Rare chests, Epic chests, and Legendary chests. Each of these chests provide you with unique items you can use. For example, Common chests may have up to 11 different items like coins, diamonds or cards that can help upgrade your players’ attributes. Rare chests hold up to 23 items, including four pro cards and one rare contract for coaches. Epic chests have 29 items that contain four pro cards, one superstar card and one rare contract. Finally, a legendary chest rewards you with 61 items, a chance at 14 pro cards, and seven superstar cards. Chests can also be purchased with diamonds if you happen to have enough. Diamonds are easy to get. They can be obtained by winning matches or unlocking chests.

Crazy Superpowers

What would a basketball game be without having superpowers? Superpowers are a fun little gem that you are sure to enjoy. There are several superpowers for players to use during matches. Want to halt your oppositions’ chances at making a crucial three-pointer? The Freeze Ball will come in handy. How about turning Invisible? Yep, you can do that too. Want to freeze your opponents in place? The Freeze ability will let you, giving you a chance to score a quick basket. All superpowers are upgradable via coins and can be unlocked depending on the number of fans you have.  The more fans you have the more superpowers you can unlock which benefits you later on.

A Total Slam Dunk

Overall, Basketball Arena is exhilarating! There is plenty to enjoy for those who like the arcade-based style or those who like sports games in general. Masomo has done a masterful job at blending the two without taking themselves too seriously. If you want a fun sports game that features quirky over-the-top characters and the use of superpowers, Basketball Arena is a true powerhouse.
