A Renaissance Fair Worth Attending
King’s Choice is an RPG (role-playing game) with a choice-based simulation that puts players at the head of the royal table in their very own kingdom. Created by ONEMT, King’s Choice allows players to build an empire, command a grand army of loyal knights, date other royals, raise heirs and generate alliances.
King’s Choice offers the player the option to play as a male or female lord and you can play as a merciless lord or a benevolent one. Players control what type of kingdom they build. After the traitorous murder of your father, you have the chance to take back the kingdom. Player’s will wage war against evil dignitaries attempting to take the throne and be hard-pressed to maintain focus amongst the many sultry suitors out to catch your attention.
Hail Fellow to Niveal
The opening sequence sets up play like a scene from an epic medieval action movie and dropplayers into the world of Niveal. Depending on the player’s choice to be male or female, the story and dialogue will change slightly. The music is nothing special, very reminiscent of a local renaissance fair. However, the visuals are striking with limited animation. King’s Choice gameplay is based on a vast map with almost limitless possibilities.
The goal of King’s Choice is to create an empire of your own choosing. Players need to build an army worthy of the task. Knights (soldiers) are the driving force in King’s Choice and will advance players against their various adversaries. To build the army, players train soldiers by gaining points to level up attributes, intelligence, leadership, and silver. Battles will move the story along through the Outpost option in the game map.
A Good Defense is the Best Offense
It is crucial to have a strong army when playing in the story mode. Winning battles is the only way to advance and level up your lord. The higher the lord’s status, the better the rewards players will receive. During battle scenes, losses are determined by the strength and number of soldiers on both sides, yours and the enemy’s. The higher the strength level, the fewer troops you will lose.
Each level and stage consists of multiple battle waves. Players must be victorious in all battle stages to pass onto the next level. Since the battle mode focuses on strength and numbers, there is no actual gameplay during battle. A simple tap-through will suffice. Continuously upgrading your knight will ensure victory in all battles.
Let Them Eat Cake or Don’t
How do players upgrade knights and strength? By utilizing the map in King’s Choice, and all it has to offer. The map has various ways to gain rewards like silver and gold to put towards your army.
Like the Knights, Heirs need constant upgrading to grow into adulthood. Upgrading heirs increases attributes and power. Players are able to marry off their heirs to other King’s Choice players.
As the Lord of Niveal in King’s Choice, you will be required to make tough decisions. Players can enter the Interior Ministry. Here is where players will handle all internal affairs.
After choosing the government option, players are prompted to answer text-based questions and win rewards like silver, attribute items, or prestige points. Prestige points also increase the lord level.
The other option is the collection. This choice will allow you to collect silver, grain, and training points.
Players may head to the Outskirts to partake in pirate invasions and hunting events. There are many ways to earn rewards and switch up the pace outside the main story. You can choose the War of Conquests, for example, or Goon Patrol for points and new lovers. Both offer more opportunities for rewards and points. As players progress in level and stage, more areas of the map will unlock.
The Brass Tax
King’s Choice is a game that has no end, as new updates happen often. There is some profanity and sexual themes. The story moves quickly with lots of plot twists and action. Some parts could be more interactive, but the voice-overs are entertaining, adding to the theatrics. The option to play as male or female adds variety to create a more personal experience. King’s Choice is a game that doesn’t require players to pay to advance. All you need is the focus of any dedicated lord.
Is it Hardcore?
It mostly is.
King’s Choice does have a pay-to-win system, and while it isn’t required, it can slow down gameplay if you don’t. Other players will advance in ranks much faster with in-app purchases. But if you can overlook that caveat, King’s Choice offers an immersive experience with text-based choices, that gives players a touch of escapism.
