A Puzzling Dating Game
Passion Worlds by Whee Games is part dating sim, part match 3 game. In the lore of Passion Worlds there have been three worlds since the dawn of creation—Earth, Underworld and the Salvatory. The boundaries between these worlds have essentially dissolved leaving the player free to travel between them. Players visit different worlds with one intention—to successfully date as many women as possible. While the premise is weird and unique, the title fails to offer compelling gameplay.
Match 3 To Flirt
Each attempt to flirt with a girl requires the player to complete a round of match 3. The match 3 gameplay is typical of games in the genre. Each round starts with a grid full of gems. Match 3 or more gems of the same color to earn points. Special gems are made when you match a lot of gems at once, such as gems that clear a vertical line on the grid. Players only receive twenty turns per round so some strategic thinking is required.
Passion Worlds does add its own twist to the match 3 genre. There are five main types of gems—Creativity, Tenacity, Intellect, Memory and Romance. Each girl likes a certain type of gem and dislikes another. You’ll get extra points for matching the type of game favored by the girl you’re flirting with. However, fewer points are earned for matching gems they dislike. Being limited to twenty turns can make the game difficult as you progress. Luckily, you can upgrade the destructive effectiveness of each type of gem. So, when you match them, you’ll earn more points.
To upgrade these skills, you’ll need to spend coins. Coins are earned by completing tasks and match 3s. However, you quickly progress to a point where it’s difficult to earn the coins required to level up enough to defeat the games increasingly difficult levels. You can of course purchase coins, which seems almost inevitable if you want to progress quickly. Coins cost anywhere from 2.49 to 24.99. Despite Whee Games’ attempts to create a more unique match 3 experience the gameplay is far from exciting and I quickly lost interest.
Getting To Know The Girls
You can also talk with girls to get to know them. Each time you engage in conversation you’ll be given three replies to choose from. Choose correctly enough times and the girl will allow you to ask her a question about herself. Unlocking these tidbits of information doesn’t seem to add anything to the game other than allowing player’s to complete some tasks. However, often your possible responses don’t make sense making it hard to gauge what the best answer might be. Honestly, some of the things the girls say don’t make sense either. I find it hard to enjoy a dating sim when I have to try to decode the meaning of every possible response.
Creepy Pics
The dating aspect of Passion Worlds is at times creepy. After a successful round of match 3, the player character snaps a photo of their date in various stages of undress. What makes this creepy are the photos in which the woman seems unaware or unprepared for the photo to be taken.
After you’ve built up your relationship through match 3 flirting, you’ll be able to take each girl on three dates. To unlock a date, however, you need to collect a bunch of items that are given as rewards for match 3’s. Yet, despite playing for days, I’ve yet to collect the items required to take anyone on a date. Considering the risqué pictures, the player character takes, it doesn’t seem like there’s much point to these dates anyway.
Passion Worlds offers bland gameplay. The match 3 puzzles just aren’t that compelling. Talking with the girls can be confusing due to the strange wording. What’s more, the difficulty increases too quickly making it almost impossible to progress without succumbing to in-app purchases. Swipe left.
Is It Hardcore?
No.
Passion Worlds offers bland gameplay and it quickly becomes difficult to progress without digging into your wallet.
